Government Assistance
The cost of a 4-year undergraduate program can be high; however, there are resources available to help you. Most provincial governments have loan programs that, along with the Canada Student Loan program, work to assist Canadian Citizens and permanent residents in full-time study.
The loans are interest-free as long as you are enrolled in full-time university study. For more details, please contact your provincial loans organization.
The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provides loans to Ontario-residents. More information about OSAP can be found on-line at:
www.osap.gov.on.ca
OSAP assumes that parents, if financially able, will financially assist their child during his or her first five years of university. Because of this, your parents' income will be taken into consideration when you apply for OSAP. Students are also expected to help finance their own education by working part-time during the school year or in the summer.
OSAP Application
The
OSAP online application is now available for students who would like to apply for assistance for September:
We encourage returning students to apply for fall OSAP by the end of May; new students should apply by the middle of June.
There is a 10 minute mandatory OSAP Loan Counselling Session which students have to pass before they will be allowed to apply.

University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students (UTAPS)
The University of Toronto is committed to insuring that no student admitted to a program at the University should be unable to enrol or complete his or her program because of a lack of financial means. To help fulfill this commitment, the University provides assistance in the form of non-repayable grants for undergraduate students; however, you are still expected to access the government aid options first.
If you are assessed by OSAP, or another Canadian provincial government financial aid program, as requiring the maximum amount of assistance available and your assessed need is still not fully covered by government aid, the University will ensure that your full needs are met.
Students concerned about the financial cost of attending university can obtain an assessment of the amount of funding they can expect to receive from government programs and other forms of financial assistance, by completing a UTAPS application. These applications are mailed in the spring to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have applied for admission to full-time studies at the University of Toronto. (Students currently enrolled in the University can pick up forms from the Admissions and Awards office, 172 St. George Street). For every new and returning student, the University examines the OSAP assessment, which is received from the provincial government in September, and identifies all students who qualify for UTAPS grants. The University will then write to the student to notify them of their eligibility.
Full-time Engineering students are automatically considered for UTAPS funding; however, if you are in financial need and have not received adequate government funding and have not heard from UTAPS, please speak with the Financial Aid officer in the Undergraduate Admissions office (GB153). For more information, please visit
www.utaps.utoronto.ca.
Faculty Grants
If you have exhausted all other means of support and still find yourself in financial difficulty, the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering can provide financial assistance in the form of a grant.
The Faculty grants do not replace OSAP or UTAPS; the grants help to alleviate temporary financial setbacks.
If you are not eligible for OSAP, you may still apply for Faculty grants; however, please keep in mind that resources are limited. Grant applications should be submitted to the Engineering Undergraduate Admissions Office (GB153).
