Letters of Registration Confirmation

Short link to this page: http://uoft.me/engletters

For a variety of reasons, students occasionally require an official letter from the University to confirm their status as a student. Letters of registration—on official letterhead and certified with a stamp—may be issued by the Office of the Registrar.

The Office of the Registrar may confirm current registration, past registration, year and program of study, full- or part-time status, expected or incurred expenses, eligibility to enrol in an upcoming session, expected graduation date (only for fourth-year students) and successful completion of a degree.

Official letters  cost $7.00 ( for the first copy and $0.50 for each additional copy however, if a student has a form for the Office of the Registrar to complete (e.g., RESP, car insurance, ISIC card), the form can be signed free of charge.

Students may order a Letter of Registration by filling out the Letter of Registration Request Form; the request form and payment should be dropped off or mailed to the Office of the Registrar. Request forms may also be faxed to (416) 978-1866. The Office of the Registrar accepts the following payment forms: cash, cheque,, money order and credit card* (through the Engineering Portal). Please note that a letter of registration request will not be processed if payment is not received. Letters may be picked up at the Office of the Registrar or mailed to a specified address. Please note that letters of registration will not be faxed or emailed to recipients or students.

It is recommended that students visit the Office of the Registrar, so that Office staff can help you choose the right letter; otherwise, please used the lined space on page two of the Letter of Registration Request Form to describe in detail what kind of letter is needed. Some letters require supplemental information (i.e., letters to exempt an individual from military service or jury duty).

We cannot guarantee that requests will be processed in fewer than five business days.

If you are mailing your request letter or payment, make your cheques out to "University of Toronto" and mail to:

Office of the Registrar

35 St. George Street, Room 157

*If you have a UTOR ID and can access the Engineering Portal, you can pay for your letter of registration online using a credit card. Once you pay for your letter you will be given an order form with a four-digit tracking number. Print and submit that form and bring it to the Registrar's Office in person, through the mail or by faxing (see instructions above).  If you choose the credit card payment option, please note: Your letter WILL NOT be produced until the payment is made and the separate request form is received.

Verification of Enrolment

When a formal written letter is not required, a Verification Of Enrolment (VOE) form may suffice.  A VOE form confirms that a student is currently registered in undergraduate studies at U of T Engineering. VOE forms may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar during business hours. There is no charge for this form.

Frequently Asked Questions about Letters

Can I get my Letter of Registration emailed to me?

Letters of Registration confirmation are notarized by the Faculty Registrar on official letterhead and with a stamp. Only original copies of the letter are valid, and therefore they cannot be sent electronically.

Can I have my letter sent through courier?

If requesting a letter of registration confirmation to be mailed, the Registrar’s Office uses regular Canada Post mail and does not have the facilities to initiate courier delivery; however, you may arrange for a pre-paid courier pick-up of your letter on your own and the Registrar’s Office will sign the waybill.

Can you state that I'm a good student in a letter?

Letters of registration confirmation can only confirm your enrolment and registration status with the Faculty. To show academic performance, you must order an official transcript.

I need my letter today. What can I do?

Letters cannot be prepared in fewer than three-to-five business days. If you have not ordered a letter in sufficient time, please consult the Office of the Registrar as to whether a verification of enrolment form might meet your needs.
