Electives are classified into four groups: Humanities and Social Science (HSS), Complementary Studies (CS), Technical and Free. There is a fifth category, Natural Science (NS) electives for the Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical programs. Please consult your program requirements to see which electives you need to take to fulfill your degree requirements.
If you are planning to take an Arts & Science course to fulfill your elective requirements, please read the
Guide to Taking Arts & Science Courses.

Free Electives
A Free Elective course is any degree credit course offered by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Arts & Science and the School of Graduate Studies. A course is considered a Free Elective if it does not duplicate material covered in courses that you have already taken or are required to take. If it is an Engineering course, it must carry a weight of at least .42 credits per session.
If you are having trouble deciding which electives to take, you should consult your
Undergraduate Academic Counsellor before making your choice. Your Undergraduate Academic Counsellor can advise you which courses would best fit into your Engineering schedule and workload, notify you if a course does not qualify as an elective and inform you of any enrolment restrictions and more.
