Short link to this page: http://uoft.me/cselectives

Complementary Studies (CS) can be broadly defined as studies in humanities, social sciences, arts, management, engineering economics and communication that complements technical curriculum.

Engineering, math or science courses—including astronomy and psychology—may not be used to fulfill your CS elective requirement. For detailed information regarding Complementary Studies, please consult the  Academic Calendar. Students are responsible for determining their qualification for taking an CS course, including but not limited to pre-requisites and required permissions.

Some areas of study that are considered complementary to Engineering studies include:

  • An introduction to the methodologies and thought process of the humanities and social sciences.
  • A basic knowledge of engineering economics.
  • Awareness of the impact of technology on society.

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering also offers several courses that may be used as CS electives:

  • APS 280—Engineering Writing
  • APS 234—Entrepreneurship and Small Business
  • APS 305—Energy Policy
  • APS 310--Defining Energy Futures in India and Canada
  • APS 432—Entrepreneurship and Business Management
  • APS 442—Cognitive and Psychological Foundations of Effective Leadership
  • APS 443 (formerly APS 501)—Leadership and Leading for Groups and Organizations
  • APS 510—Technologies and Organizations in Global Energy Systems
  • CHE/CIV/ECE/MIE/MSE488—Entrepreneurship and Business for Engineers
  • JRE 300—Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance
  • JRE 410—Markets and Competitive Strategy
  • JRE 420—People Management and Organizational Behaviour.
