Current Engineering Undergraduates

Humanities & Social Science (HSS) Electives

Short link to this page: http://uoft.me/hss

It’s been said that the purpose of a liberal education is to liberate the individual from the parochialism of direct personal experience. And it is with that spirit that the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board would like you to enrol in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) courses. In particular, you should choose courses that explore the central issues, thought processes and scholarly methods found in these disciplines.

Please note that HSS electives are a subset of Complementary Studies (CS) courses, so they can be used to satisfy CS elective requirements.

The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science (A&S) teaches a large number of courses that cover the humanities and social science disciplines. We encourage you to explore and develop your interests by choosing, when possible, courses that appeal to you.

Here is a list of types of courses which you are not permitted to take to fulfill your HSS elective requirements:

  • Languages
  • Grammar
  • Mathematics (including symbolic logic, probability and inductive logic)
  • Economics
  • Technique (e.g. art, music, video production)
  • Physical and life sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology, zoology, computer science and psychology)

To help you make your decision, there is a list of approved HSS courses listed at the bottom of this page. You are free to suggest other courses for consideration. If you are aware of a course that you think should be on the list, please consult your Undergraduate Academic  Counsellor. If you would like to take a course that is not on the list, please note that you are not guaranteed credit for it. You must receive approval from your department's undergraduate office or Counsellor before you enrol in a course that is not listed on the approved elective list. The list changes from year to year, so courses that were approved in the past, may not be on the current list. It is your responsibility to ensure that you enrol in an approved course and that you determine whether or not you have completed the necessary prerequisites.

Acceptable HSS Courses

Not all of the courses listed on the HSS list are available every year; please review the current A&S Timetable and Academic Calendar  and Timetable by FAS Sponsors/Depts to see if the course you would like to enrol in is offered. Students are responsible for determining their qualification for taking an HSS/CS course, including but not limited to pre-requisites and required permissions.
