In addition to their primary area of study, undergraduate Engineering students have the opportunity to study one of three Engineering Minors in some of the most interesting areas in the profession today:
BenefitsAside from allowing students to customize their Engineering degree to suit their specific interests, pursuing an Engineering Minor yields several benefits. Engineering Minors allow students to gain interdisciplinary experience and exposure to concepts and perspectives that may not be a part of their degree program—thus widening their understanding of the engineering profession and the issues that impact engineers. Upon completion of an Engineering Minor, students will also be better equipped to perform interdisciplinary research. Engineering Minors can be completed within a regular degree and will be noted on transcripts.
EligibilityEngineering Minors are generally open to all current undergraduate Engineering students at the University of Toronto. Some exceptions apply to students in Engineering Science.
General RequirementsIn general, students wishing to pursue an Engineering Minor must take a minimum of 6 half-courses. Of these six half-courses, typically, one course is mandatory, a second course comes from a list, and four more courses come from a broad list of electives. At least two courses must be at the Advanced Level. Please click on your minor of interest to learn more about the required courses.
Completion of an Engineering Minor is subject to the following constraints:
- Students must ensure they meet the requirements of their chosen Engineering degree program or Option.
- Of the 6 (half-year) courses required for the minor, one (half-year) course can also be a core course in a student’s Program or Option, if applicable.
- Either a Thesis or Design course can count for up to two (half-year) Advanced levele courses towards the 6 required courses if the Thesis or Design course is strongly related to the subject area of the minor. This requires approval of the Director of the Minor.
- Availability of the courses to complete an Engineering Minor (including the foundational courses) for timetabling purposes is not guaranteed; the onus is on the student to ensure compatibility with their timetable.
- Students must secure approval from their home Department before selecting any elective outside their home Department.
How to EnrolStudents can enrol in an Engineering Minor at any time in their program. Students complete their minor using their electives in Second, Third and Fourth Year. Students should consider the Minors while selecting their courses. Each minor has a specific enrolment form for you to complete and submit to the Cross-Disciplinary Programs Office:
