Professional Experience Year

The Professional Experience Year (PEY) internship program allows you to apply your engineering knowledge in a 12-16 month project-based professional internship. The length of the placement offers you enough time to become involved in large-scale projects, build relationships with employers and achieve professional accomplishments and milestones. Students who elect to participate in the program make industry contacts, gain valuable career skills and significant professional experience before graduation.

The PEY internship program has been in existence for over 20 years, and during this time it has earned an outstanding reputation in both academic and industry circles. PEY offers students an outstanding education, a range of eligible engineering career paths to choose from and strong established industry partnerships.

Last year, PEY placed students in  over 160 companies, which encompass broad geographical regions: Chile, Alaska, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland & Labrador and Japan.

PEY vs. Co-op: What's the difference?

Many universities offer traditional co-op programs, which help students get repeated exposure to the workplace by placing them in short-term opportunities over the course of their undergraduate studies; however, PEY involves much more than simply exposing students to jobs. PEY is about accomplishments achieved over a 12-16 month internship where students are involved in large-scale projects, developing lasting relationships with employers and having stories to tell about significant practical experience outside the classroom. PEY is about career preparation and development.

PEY Information Sessions

If you are interested in PEY, you are advised to attend a PEY information session, so that you can learn more about the process, preparation and benefits of a PEY internship experience. The PEY program is intense and requires your commitment to participate in individual and group sessions, which are designed to develop your knowledge, skills and attitudes that foster successful life-long career management competencies. Students who participate in PEY are also permitted to participate in targeted seminars, workshops and individual and group sessions.

Engineering Summer Internship Program (eSIP) Program

The Engineering Summer Internship Program (eSIP) is a paid four-month summer co-op program available to 2nd & 3rd year engineering students. The value of the eSIP program is that it acts as an introductory career development program, particularly for the 2nd year students that make up the majority of applicants. Students are introduced to concepts and tools to prepare them for the workplace and understand the dynamics therein. This is critical as the knowledge gained from the eSIP four month placement makes them competitive and further applied in their participation in the PEY 12-16 month Program after their 3rd year of study.
