Personal Web Page

Every user with an ECF UNIX account can create their own web page. The purpose of this web page is to satisfy the requirements of some web based courses. Some space is also set aside for the user to include personal information about themselves. Many users place their resumé on their web page. Users must keep this personal web space to a minimum.

To create your personal webpage you must run the wwwinit command on one of the UNIX systems. Your URL will be http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~loginname, where loginname is your ECF UNIX login. The wwwinit command creates a directory on the webserver that is pointed to by a link called public_html. This link resides under the user's home directory. Under public_html is a file called index.html which is the starting point for the webpage.

Four CGI wrapper programs have been installed on the ECF web server so that users may make use of cgi scripts. cgiwrap and nph-cgiwrap are the wrapper programs for cgi and non-parsed header scripts respectively. cgiwrapd and nph-cgiwrapd are the debugging versions of the programs allowing users to troubleshoot their cgi scripts. The wrapper programs expect the cgi script to be located in a directory called ~/public_html/cgi-bin. The script can then be invoked using a command similar to the one shown below:

<FORM ACTION="/cgi-bin/wrapper_program/~user_name/cgi_script" METHOD="POST">

Where wrapper_program is one of the wrappers mentioned above and user_name is your login name. REMEMBER, your script must have execute permissions on, and the 1st line in the perl script should begin with #!/local/bin/perl
