Appeals
As per the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Academic Calendar:
*On June 1, 2009, the Faculty's Ombuds Committee has been replaced with an Academic Appeals Board.
A student wishing to appeal a decision with respect to any petition should submit an intention to appeal in written form addressed to the Office of the Registrar with any new documentation or new information that might have affected the petition decision of the Committee on Examinations.
The Committee on Examinations will review an intention to appeal with two possible outcomes:
1) Accommodate part or all of the original petition request
2) Find no new pertinent information has been added by the intent to appeal and forward the request for an appeal hearing to the Academic Appeals Board if the student wishes to pursue the appeals process further.
Intentions to appeal to the Academic Appeals Board must be made within thirty days of the date of notification of the original petition decision from the Committee on Examinations. The Academic Appeals Board, which is represented by a Hearing Panel composed of two members of the teaching staff and at least one student, will consider the appeal, and, on request, will hear the student in person.
Should the Academic Appeals Board so decide, it will undertake to intercede with the appropriate authority on behalf of the student. The Academic Appeals Board decision rendered by the Academic Appeals Board to grant an appeal or to not intercede further is the final decision of the Faculty.
A student wishing to appeal against a final decision of the Faculty may appeal to the Governing Council of the University. In that event, the student should consult the Secretary, Academic Appeals Board, Office of the Governing Council, about the preparation and submission of the appeal. Appeals to the Governing Council must be made within ninety days of the date of notification of the final decision of the Faculty.
The University of Toronto's Office of Student Affairs keeps a list of resources and policy links related to filing complaints against university policies.
